Medium-sized businesses and non-profits can often share technical needs with small businesses and non-profits. However, with growth often comes growing pains. While small offices may get by without creating an Intranet to facilitate communication and collaboration, an organization can quickly reach a size where in-person communication and e-mail are no longer enough to keep the company running smoothly.

Enter "Groupware". Most people are familiar (or at least have heard of) Microsoft Outlook. Many people do not realize that it is, in addition to being an e-mail client, is the client portion of the groupware suite known as Microsoft Exchange. Microsoft Exchange offers businesses and organizations powerful collaboration features, such as shared calendars, public folders, shared address books, all managed with a comprehensive and complex user rights and roles architecture.

Many businesses are discovering, however, that they only need a subset of the Microsoft Exchange feature set, and are often more comfortable with a web client for groupware. Since web-centered clients can be secured relatively easily compared with Microsoft Exchange native mode, and Outlook Web Access has had a history of not scaling well, many choose to go with web-based groupware solutions, which can free a company from Microsoft licensing requirements, as well as allowing medium-sized organizations to implement remote access and satellite offices without "Outlook Pain".
